It’s official: Josh Maja leaves Bordeaux

Ligue 2 side Bordeaux have announced the departure of Josh Maja after the expiry of his contract this week.

The Nigerian is reportedly the subject of interest from France and beyond for a free transfer this summer.

Maja spearheaded Bordeaux’s efforts to seal an instant return back to the top flight, netting 16 goals in the second tier as David Guion’s men narrowly missed out on promotion in bizarre circumstances.

The 24 year old reportedly had an automatic renewal clause in his contract, which would have been triggered had Bordeaux finished in the top two spots in Ligue 2 – but this was not the case.

After breaking onto the scene at Sunderland, Maja joined Les Girondins in January of 2019, and would go on to make a century of appearances for the club.

Maja scored 29 goals and provided nine assists in total for Bordeaux in 92 appearances across five seasons with 16 of the goals scored in 37 appearances in Ligue 2 while nine goals and two assists came in 47 games for the club while in Ligue 1.
