Iwobi Breaks AFCON Records, Leads Nigeria’s Creative Charge

Alex Iwobi has emerged as one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, cementing his place in history with a string of influential displays.

The Fulham midfielder has registered the most line-breaking passes leading to shots (13) and goals (4) in the tournament, while also recording the highest number of total line-breaking passes in the knockout stages with 44.

At 29, Iwobi’s consistency has been remarkable. His appearance tally now stands at 23 across four AFCON final tournaments from 2019 to 2025, making him the Nigerian midfielder with the most appearances in the competition. In doing so, he has surpassed the legendary figures of Austin Okocha, Muda Lawal, and Mikel Obi, who each managed 22.

Iwobi has scored once and provided two assists in AFCON appearances, but his influence has gone far beyond statistics. He is widely regarded as one of the architects of Nigeria’s attacking success, playing a pivotal role in the Super Eagles’ record haul of 14 goals at AFCON 2025.

His vision, passing range, and ability to break defensive lines have been central to the team’s fluid attacking play.
