Iwobi scores as Fulham beat Benfica 1-0 in Portugal

Alex Iwobi scored the only goal as Fulham defeated Benfica 1-0 in a lively pre-season encounter at Estadio Algarve on Friday night.

According to Fulham’s official website, the goal following a clinical counter attack by Fulham.

‘Terrific running from Adama TraorĂ© saw him break through the lines and create a four-on-two situation in our favour. He fed Iwobi who played a cool one-two with Antonee Robinson before slotting inside the near post,’ wrote the website.

Iwobi was on for 79 minutes while his Nigerian compatriot, Calvin Bassey featured for the entire duration of the game.

The two Nigerians will be keen to help Fulham move further up the table and fight for a place in Europe when the new Premier League season begins later this month.

Iwobi featured 33 times for Fulham and scored six times, with five coming in 30 Premier League games, his highest in a single season of the competition. He also provided two assists.

Bassey scored once from his centre back position in 32 appearances for the Cottagers with the goal scored in 29 games in the Premier League.
