Iyiazi Protest Rejected as Glasgow 2026 Para Shot Put Medals Confirmed
Nigeria’s hopes of securing a medal in the women’s F55-57 shot put at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games were dashed after a protest lodged on behalf of defending champion Eucharia Iyiazi was rejected by the competition referee.
The protest, submitted on the evening of 27 July, had delayed the medal ceremony for the event, but the Technical Delegate, Chris Cohen, later confirmed that the referee had ruled against Nigeria’s appeal, meaning the original official results remained unchanged.
India’s Sharmila was confirmed as the gold medallist after producing a season’s best throw of 9.81m in the F57 category. Ghana’s Zinabu Issah claimed silver with a best effort of 8.65m, while India’s Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla Shilpa completed the podium with a personal best of 7.26m.
Iyiazi, who entered the competition as the Games record holder with the 10.03m mark she set at Birmingham 2022, was unable to record a valid mark in Glasgow after all six of her attempts were ruled fouls. Her final result was listed as NM (No Mark).
The Nigerian athlete, who has been one of the country’s most successful para athletes, had been aiming to defend the Commonwealth title she won four years ago. However, she was unable to challenge for the medals after failing to register a legal throw.
