Johnson and Gatlin: Tebogo is the future of track and field
1996 Olympics 200 and 400m champion, Michael John and four-time world champion, Justin Gatlin believe Botswana sprinter, Lestile Tebogo is the future of track and field after the 21 year old ran a new 300m indoor world record time of 30.69 at the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa.
Tebogo, double sprint medalist at the World Athletics Championships last year in Budapest, Hungary, broke the 31.56 best set just over a year ago by Steven Gardiner at the South Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex in Columbia, South Carolina.
“There’s always talk of who’s the next great one in track. The hype and promise usually fizzles. But Letsile Tebogo is one of the rare ones I might bet on!,’ said Johnson who broke the world record twice on his way to successfully completing the 200/400m double in 1996.
Gatlin also shared Johnson’s sentiment.
“I think Tebogo is the future of Track and Field when it comes to men’s sprinting. I love the way he runs, I love his technique, I love his game, I love how he do his moves, he has the talent where he can run you down, so he has top end as well. I wanna see what happens when he grows…’
