Joseph Dosu Dispels Rumours Over 1997 Car Accident

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Joseph Dosu has spoken out to clarify the circumstances surrounding the 1997 car accident in Lagos that ended his promising career.

A year after helping Nigeria win gold at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Dosu’s life changed dramatically when he was involved in a serious crash that left him close to paralysis and forced him into early retirement at just 23.

The incident occurred as Dosu was driving home with a friend following Nigeria’s qualification for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

At the time, rumours circulated that he had been drunk after attending a team celebration party. Speaking on the Play Zone Podcast, the former Julius Berger shot stopper firmly denied those claims.

‘I think we played against Guinea Bissau at the National Stadium. I was on the bench; we won the game 3-1 or 3-0. After the game, there was a party going on for all of us at Eko Hotel. I didn’t attend, I didn’t go. That was why a lot of people said I was drunk, but I didn’t attend the party,’ Dosu explained.

He recounted leaving the hotel around 8pm with a friend, a police officer, before the accident occurred near Palm Grove.

‘In-between what I saw was just cow, real life, spiritually only God knows. I called my friend and asked if he was okay, he said yes. I said I am not okay, then he started calling for help. In-between when he was trying to stop some cars, that was when Taribo West was passing,’ Dosu recalled.

After the Olympics, Dosu had signed with Serie A side Reggiana but struggled to make an impact before the accident cut short his career.

Despite the setback, he remains remembered as part of Nigeria’s golden generation, with his role in the 1996 triumph cementing his place in the nation’s football history.
