Kenya’s Chepchirchir runs fastest 800m time in Zagreb in 26 years!

Kenya’s 2023 World Athletics Championships 1500m finalist, Nelly Chepchirchir ran a record smashing 1:57.00 meeting record to win the 800m at the Memorial Borisa Hanžekovića 2024, a World Athletics Continental Tour gold meeting in Zagreb, Croatia on Sunday.

The time is the fastest at the meeting in over two decades. The former record was held by Russia’s Elena Afanasyeva who ran 1:57.51 to win in July 1998.

The time is also Chepchirchir’s lifetime best in the two full laps race, the seventh fastest this year, sixth fastest by a Kenya, 13th by an African woman and 81st in the world, all in the all-time list.

Ethiopian duo of Natoya Goule-Toppin (1:57.43) and Nigist Getachew (1:57.47) came in second and third respectively.
