Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road to Host Cycling Events at National Intermediate Games
The Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road is set to take on a new sporting role after the Lagos State Government designated part of the ambitious project to host some cycling events at the inaugural National Intermediate Games scheduled for October.
The development was disclosed at a media briefing in Lagos on Tuesday as the state intensifies preparations to host athletes aged between 15 and 18 from across the country.
The coastal road is already familiar with sporting activity, having hosted part of the 42.195km Access Bank Lagos City Marathon in February. Its selection for the National Intermediate Games will further demonstrate its potential as a venue for major sporting events.
The Local Organising Committee also disclosed that the University of Lagos will accommodate contingents from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory during the Games.
The committee assured participants of seamless transportation throughout the competition, saying detailed arrangements had been put in place to ensure that no team arrives late for its scheduled events.
Several sporting facilities across Lagos have been selected to host the various competitions, including the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, which is currently undergoing extensive renovation, Rowe Park, Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Yaba College of Technology, Lagos Tennis Courts and other venues.
Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Falodun, said the Local Organising Committee and the Main Organising Committee had also put measures in place to ensure strict compliance with the age requirements for the Games.
He said both committees had mapped out plans to ensure that only athletes aged between 15 and 18 are allowed to participate, in line with the objectives of the inaugural National Intermediate Games.
The Games are expected to bring together young athletes from across Nigeria, with Lagos seeking to use the event to provide a platform for identifying and nurturing the next generation of sporting talents.
