Lekan Fatodu Appointed President of Nigeria Aquatics Federation

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed the appointment of Lekan Fatodu as President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation.

The announcement was made by NSC Director General, Bukola Olopade, who emphasized that the move is part of a broader strategy to reposition sports federations through capable leadership, institutional reforms, and a renewed focus on athlete development.

Fatodu, who currently serves as Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), steps into the role at a crucial time when stakeholders are demanding stronger governance, improved athlete pathways, enhanced technical development, and greater international competitiveness for aquatic sports in Nigeria.

Reacting to his appointment, Fatodu described the role as a call to service and a responsibility to advance another critical segment of Nigerian sports. He stated:

‘This appointment represents an opportunity to build stronger structures for aquatic sports development across the country. Our focus will be on creating pathways that identify talent early, strengthen coaching and technical capacity, improve competition opportunities, and ensure that Nigerian athletes can compete successfully on the continental and global stage. Sustainable sports development requires systems, consistency, and collaboration, and that is the approach we intend to pursue.’

The appointment is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s ambition of building a more competitive aquatic sports program, aligning with the country’s broader vision of strengthening governance and driving excellence across its sporting ecosystem.
