Like Super Eagles, Super Falcons Get Play-Off Lifeline After Cameroon Defeat

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been handed a World Cup qualification lifeline despite their agonising 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in Sunday’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final in Casablanca, following a similar route taken by the Super Eagles in their own qualification campaign.

The Indomitable Lionesses struck in the 19th minute with a well-executed free-kick to take a lead that ultimately proved decisive.

Nigeria responded strongly and dominated possession and territory for long periods, but Cameroon’s defence and goalkeeper Michaely repeatedly frustrated the Falcons.

Gift Monday and Jennifer Echegini came close to restoring parity, while coach Justin Madugu introduced Uchenna Kanu, Toni Payne, Esther Okoronkwo and Asisat Oshoala at different stages as Nigeria pushed desperately for an equaliser.

Despite sustained pressure and relentless attacking waves deep into stoppage time, the Falcons could not breach the Cameroonian defence, bringing their WAFCON title defence to an end.

However, Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil remain alive. The Super Falcons will now face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana later this week in a crucial play-off, with the winner advancing to the Inter-Continental play-off for a place at next year’s World Cup finals.

The defeat therefore ends Nigeria’s quest for another continental title, but the Super Falcons still have an opportunity to secure a place on the global stage through the play-off route.
