Lima 2024: AFN to get financial support from World Athletics for World U20 Championships

World Athletics has revealed that it will offer financial support to participating teams at the World U20 Athletics Championships billed to hold from August 27 to 31 in Lima, Peru.

This is coming on the heels of reported complaint by faceless athletics officials regarding the Federal Ministry of Sports Development’s support for the team.

According to the story on social media, the Ministry has reportedly cut down the federation’s list of 25 athletes to 15 but there was no mention of the financial support from the world governing body which could have made up for the number reportedly dropped or close to it.

Each participating team is given a specific quota of the number of athletes and coaches to be given full board (flight, accommodation and feeding) and this has been communicated to the AFN.

This much was detailed in the Team information manual.

‘The financial quota by member federation, and the financial support offered by World Athletics/Local Organizing Committee, was detailed in circular M/19/24,’ World Athletics wrote in the team manual.

The AFN will however need to pay for any athlete and official outside the quota given to it and this must be settled before the team can receive accreditation tags.

Athletics watchers believe AFN should be discussing the difference in terms of the number with the Sports Ministry and not cry out that the country may miss the Championships like it did in 2000 in Chile.

The financial support, the believe, will mean Nigeria will be present in Lima while it is the number of athletes that will be affected.
