Gunmen Kill 11 at Football Field in Mexico

At least 11 people, including a woman and a child, were killed when gunmen opened fire at a football field in Salamanca, in Mexico’s central state of Guanajuato.

Authorities confirmed that 12 others were wounded in the attack, which occurred at the end of a local soccer match.

Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto condemned the assault, describing it as part of a wider surge of violence in the state.

‘This incident adds to a wave of violence that we are sadly experiencing in the state, and particularly in Salamanca,’ he said, stressing that criminal groups were attempting to intimidate authorities but would not succeed.

He appealed directly to President Claudia Sheinbaum for federal support to restore order.

The state attorney general’s office confirmed that an investigation has been launched, with coordinated efforts underway to strengthen security and track down those responsible. Prieto vowed in remarks posted on Facebook that ‘those responsible will be found.’

The attack has drawn international attention, with several global media outlets including the Daily Mirror, CNN, and the BBC reporting on the incident and highlighting Guanajuato’s reputation as Mexico’s deadliest state.

Despite being a popular tourist destination and industrial hub, Guanajuato has consistently ranked as the country’s most violent region due to ongoing gang turf wars.

Official homicide statistics show that cartel rivalries have fueled relentless bloodshed, with Salamanca now the latest community to suffer a mass casualty attack.
