Liverpool 9-0 Bournemouth: Reds in record-equalling EPL win

Liverpool equalled the all-time Premier League record for the biggest ever win after demolishing Bournemouth 9-0 at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side dominated from start to finish as Scott Parker’s Cherries were given a traumatising reality check in their fourth game since being promoted from the Championship.

Luis Diaz set the tone for the rest of the afternoon after netting just three minutes into the match. And things rapidly turned for the worst for Bournemouth as Harvey Elliott, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk’s header from a corner made it 5-0 by half-time.

Any Bournemouth fans hoping for some respite at the break would have been left bitterly disappointed as Klopp’s well-oiled machine showed no signs of letting up.

A Chris Mepham own goal one minute after half-time indicated that Parker’s words had not had an effect in the dressing room. Next to join in on the fun was Brazilian star Firmino again in the 62nd minute just as Bournemouth looked to have finally got their act together.

Unfortunately for the travelling supporters, that opened the floodgates once more as new 19-year-old signing Fabio Carvalho netted his first for the Reds. And to cap off a historic win, Diaz headed in the ninth strike with five minutes left on the clock.

Liverpool very nearly went on to become the first side to score 10 in a Premier League match. But despite some late scares, Bournemouth did just enough to avoid suffering that fate.

Still, Klopp and his players will take immense pride in shattering the 7-0 club record victory they set against Crystal Palace two years ago.

This is the first time Liverpool have scored nine goals in a single top-flight game for the first time since September 1989 vs Crystal Palace (9-0), while Saturday’s win was their joint-biggest in their league history (also 9-0 v Crystal Palace in 1989 and 10-1 v Rotherham Town in 1896).

One of Liverpool’s goalscorers Trent Alexander-Arnold said after the match:

“We’ve taken our chances today. We started the game really well, which is what we need after the defeat on Monday – we wanted to come out of the blocks very fast, be on the front foot straight away. We needed that.”
