Maduka Okoye wants to return to the Super Eagles ‘as soon as possible’
Says it was hard watching AFCON on TV
Udinese of Italy goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye says he is eager to return to the Super Eagles two years after he last featured for the team at the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
The 24 year old was in goal in Nigeria’s 1-0 loss to Tunisia in the round of 16 tie of AFCON 2022.
The former Sparta Rotterdam shot stopper recently returned to reckoning at club football and has kept three clean sheets in nine Series A appearances so far this season.
He is now eager to get back to the Nigeria senior national team.
‘The national team is an important thing for me and I want to return as soon as possible. It was bad watching the Africa Cup of Nations from home, but this is football.’
Okoye also spoke about his return to reckoning at his club after failing to play a single game in the Sky Bet Championship while in England with Watford.
He started his Serie A career also on the bench as he was an unused substitute in Udinese’s first 17 games of the Italian topflight season.
He made his Serie A debut in the 3-0 defeat of Juventus at the Bluenergy Stadium last December and has started all nine games Udinese have played since then.
‘The day before the match, coach Gabriele Cioffi told me that I would be the starter. He asked me if I was ready and said he trusted me.’
Okoye did not disappoint as he kept his first of three clean sheets so far against one of Serie A big teams.
