Mainoo Secures Champions League Return for Manchester United
Kobbie Mainoo marked his new long-term contract in spectacular fashion, firing home the decisive goal in Manchester United’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The result not only completed a league double over their fiercest rivals but also guaranteed Champions League qualification with three matches still to play.
The Red Devils flew out of the blocks, with Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko striking inside the opening 14 minutes to put Michael Carrick’s side firmly in control.
Arne Slot’s men were handed a lifeline early in the second half when Amad Diallo’s misplaced pass allowed Dominik Szoboszlai to reduce the deficit. A further error from goalkeeper Senne Lammens gifted Cody Gakpo the equaliser, setting up a frenetic finale.
With the game finely poised, academy graduate Mainoo smashed home in the 77th minute, just days after committing his future to United until 2031.
The victory means Carrick has become only the sixth manager, and the first Englishman, to win eight of his opening nine Premier League home matches, a feat last achieved by Antonio Conte in 2016/17.
Since Carrick’s appointment in January, United have scored more goals than any other side in the league (27).
Liverpool’s defensive frailties were once again exposed, with the team conceding two or more goals in 16 league matches this season their highest tally since 2013/14.
