Man United Join Race For Calvin Bassey

Red Devils Monitoring Fulham Star Ahead Of January Window As Everton, Newcastle Also Show Interest

Manchester United have reportedly joined the race to sign Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as they look to strengthen their central defensive options ahead of the January transfer window.

According to TEAMtalk, the Red Devils are keeping a close watch on the Fulham centre-back, who has emerged as one of the standout performers for the London club this season despite their inconsistent results.

United’s interest comes after defensive shortcomings were exposed in their recent defeats, conceding seven goals across their last two competitive matches, including a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como and a 3-0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth.

The results have intensified the need for defensive reinforcements, with manager Michael Carrick facing questions about the team’s defensive organisation and the long-term composition of his backline.

Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven remain young options with considerable room for development, while Harry Maguire is approaching his 34th birthday and entering the final year of his contract.

Lisandro Martinez is also approaching the end of his current deal, while Matthijs de Ligt has only recently returned from a lengthy injury absence.

Bassey, 26, is therefore viewed as a potential addition capable of strengthening United’s defensive options.

However, Manchester United face competition for the Nigerian international’s signature, with Premier League rivals Everton and Newcastle United also reportedly interested.

Beyond England, Italian champions Inter Milan, German clubs Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have also been linked with the Fulham defender.

Bassey’s contractual situation could make him an attractive proposition in the January market. His current Fulham deal is due to expire at the end of the season, although the club hold an option to extend it by another 12 months.

That situation could offer interested clubs an opportunity to negotiate a reduced transfer fee rather than risk competing for his signature when his contract situation becomes more pressing.
