Manchester United, Ronaldo Seek New Scoring Records At Newcastle
Manchester United will be seeking a stand alone scoring record when they confront Newcastle at St James’ Park Monday night in a Premier League game.
The Red Devils have scored 112 Premier League goals against the Magpies, same scoring record Arsenal have against Rafa Benitez’s Everton.
No team have scored more against a single opponent in the competition’s history.
While Cristiano Ronaldo who has scored seven in 13 Premier League games so far this season will be relied on to fire Man United to a new scoring record tonight, the Portuguese will also be seeking a personal record of his own.
If he scores a brace tonight, he will have scored nine times against Eddie Howe side which will be a new personal record as he has scored more against Aston Villa (8) than against any Premier League team.
Ronaldo’s seven goals against Newcastle prior to tonight’s game have come in his last four league appearances against them, including a brace on his return to Man United in the reverse fixture this season.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have conceded 79 Premier League goals in 2021, the joint-most in a single calendar year in the competition (also Ipswich Town in 1994). The last top-flight team to concede more over the course of a year were West Bromwich Albion in 1985 (87).
The Magpies have won two of their last four Premier League home matches against Man Utd (L2), more than they had in their previous 13 against the Red Devils at St James’ Park (W1 D3 L9). They did lose this exact fixture 4-1 last season, however.
In 27 head-to-head encounters between the two sides, Manchester United hold the clear advantage, having won 17 games.
Newcastle United are 19th in the league table, three points behind 17th-placed Watford who have two games in hand.
It is not looking pretty for Eddie Howe’s men right now, and the possibility that they might have to build from scratch under their new ownership in the second division of English football looms large.
Despite some strong performances from forwards Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson, Newcastle United have struggled as a unit.
