Mihambo warns Brume and others: ‘I’m in great shape for the Olympics’
Defending Olympics long jump champion and two-time world champion, Malaika Mihambo says she is physically and mentally ready to defend her Olympics long jump title after winning the event at the London Diamond League meeting on Saturday afternoon.
Mihambo won with 6.87m, her very first jump of the afternoon and believes she is ready for the big one in Paris.
The German says she only needs a little bit of rest to enable her come back to her very best after contacting Covid around the European Championships.
‘I feel quite good about it. I had COVID during/after the European Championships so I still need some time to rest and come back so that I’m at full capacity again. It felt good to lead from jump one, I knew it wasn’t an optimal jump so I’m really happy about that.
‘Once I’m in Paris I’ll be completing focused on the Games. Physically and mentally I’m in great shape and I’m just looking forward to it and want to enjoy it,’ said the 30 year old German who has leapt at least 7.00m since she leapt 7.30m to win the world title in 2019 with exception of last year when she was only able to jump 7.93m
Mihambo is one of the athletes the Nigerian trio of Ese Brume (bronze medalist in Tokyo), Ruth Usoro and Prestina Ochonogor will battle for podium appearances in Paris.
