National stadium, Surulere tartan track is back!

Several years after it was abandoned, the tartan track inside the mainbowl of the National stadium in Surulere, Lagos is ready for use after its rehabilitation during the tenure of Sunday Akin Dare, the immediate past Minister of Sports.

Sportsnow visited the abandoned stadium on Saturday and discovered that the tartan track, the football pitch and the scoreboard have been fixed.

‘What is left now is for the seating areas to be fixed, especially the covered area and sporting activities can resume at the stadium,’ said one of the workers of the company responsible for rehabilitation of the tartan track at the stadium who pleaded not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Sportsnow recalls the stadium had been host to major international championships and Games in the past.

The stadium hosted the African Games in 1973, the African Athletics Championships in 1989 and the Africa Cup of Nations in both 1980 and 2000.

The stadium also hosted the All Nigeria Athletics Championships christened the Nigeria/Mobil track and field championships for several years.
