NBF Appoints Omo-Agege as Pro Boxing Committee Chairman
The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has ratified the appointment of Mr. Azania Omo-Agege as chairman of its professional boxing committee.
Omo-Agege, a seasoned sports administrator, previously served as NBF vice president and interim president, as well as vice president of the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC), where he spearheaded reforms across the continent.
His appointment comes amid a major shake-up in Nigerian boxing. Several international bodies, including the WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO, ABU, and BoxRec, have formally disowned the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC), citing unethical practices such as age falsification, pre-arranged fight results, and financial improprieties.
In response, BoxRec and other global authorities have resolved to work directly with the NBF, which is recognized by law as the governing body for boxing in Nigeria.
The NBF emphasized the importance of taking charge of professional boxing, especially since pro fighters with 15 bouts or fewer are now eligible to compete at the Olympics.
The Federation praised the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its stance against malpractice in Nigerian sports and aligned its reforms with the NSC’s Renewed Hope for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE) initiative.
The NBF also noted that the NSC may not have been fully briefed on the operations of the NBBofC, reiterating that only the NBF is legally empowered to oversee boxing activities nationwide.
