Can Israel Okon Make History as the Third Nigerian to Complete a Sprint Double at the NCAA Championships?
This is the burning question for Nigerian athletics followers as 19-year-old Israel Okon heads into the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The Auburn University sprinter has already raised expectations after breaking the 10-second barrier in the 100m (9.99) and dipping under 20 seconds in the 200m (19.94) at the NCAA regional championships in Kentucky a fortnight ago.
Okon’s performances place him in rare company: he is the 16th Nigerian in history to run inside 10 seconds and only the fourth to run the 200m under 20 seconds.
Indoors, he had already signaled his potential with a 6.48 in the 60m, and more recently he blazed to a 20.10 in the half-lap.
With Auburn teammate Kanyinsola Ajayi contesting only the 100m, Okon is Nigeria’s lone candidate for the sprint double. Yet Ajayi remains a formidable obstacle. The reigning Nigerian 60m and 100m record holder has an 8–0 head-to-head advantage over Okon since their first clash at the 3rd AFN Golden League in Abuja in May 2023.
For Nigerian athletics watchers, the intrigue lies in whether Okon can finally overcome Ajayi and etch his name alongside Olopade Adeniken (1992) and Divine Oduduru (2019) in the NCAA history books.
Eugene could well be the stage where Okon announces himself as the next great Nigerian sprinter.
