NFF: Falconets Were Not Disgraced Despite Colombia Defeat

The Nigeria Football Federation has praised the Falconets for their effort despite their heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

NFF Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, told the players that they had given their best and had no reason to feel disgraced by the result.

‘You gave your best out there, and the NFF and every Nigerian watching saw that you held nothing back,’ Ikpeme said.

‘You did not take the Colombians for granted and you certainly did not play with any form of complex.

‘It is a game you could have won easily if you had been able to convert some of the numerous chances that you created, but that is sport. Please don’t be disoriented by the result.’

Nigeria were eliminated after Valerin Loboa scored in the second minute of stoppage time, converting a rebound after goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma had initially blocked her effort.

The Falconets had created opportunities of their own but were unable to find the breakthrough before Kafayat Masifere was sent off in the second half.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Poland, Her Excellency Chioma Ohakim Esq, also offered words of encouragement to the players and officials in the dressing room following the defeat.

‘The result was unfortunate because you played your hearts out,’ Ohakim said.

‘Everyone who saw the match can testify to your determination and desire to make it to the semi-finals. Nigerians in Poland are very proud of your efforts.’

The defeat ended Nigeria’s campaign in the quarter-finals, while Colombia progressed to the last four.
