Nigeria Champion Tyler Johnson Runs 45.17 Season’s Best in Canada
Reigning Nigerian 400m champion Tyler Johnson produced a personal season’s best performance of 45.17 seconds at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational in Alberta, Canada, to move up to fourth on Nigeria’s 2026 performance list.
Johnson, who officially switched his international allegiance from the United States to Nigeria in March, improved on his previous season’s best of 45.49 seconds, which he set in Canada in June.
The latest performance marks another significant milestone in his debut season representing Nigeria.
The 28-year-old has enjoyed a strong campaign, having claimed his maiden Nigerian national title last month after clocking 45.75 seconds to win the men’s 400m at the National Championships held at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Sports Complex in Lagos.
Also competing at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational, three-time Nigerian sprint champion Usheoritse Itshekiri clocked a personal season’s best of 10.23 seconds in the men’s 100m.
Despite the improved performance, Itshekiri narrowly missed out on a place in the final, which was won by American sprinter Brandon Hicklin in a wind-assisted time of 9.85 seconds.
