Nigeria Faces More Than ₦8bn Bill to Host 2030 World U20 Championships
Nigeria could face a financial commitment running into several billions of naira beyond ₦8 billion if it wins the right to host the 2030 World Athletics U20 Championships, with the cost of staging the event separate from expenditure on infrastructure and accommodation.
The World Athletics U20 Championships Bid Guide puts the indicative event budget at between $5 million and $6 million, equivalent to approximately ₦6.6 billion to ₦8 billion at an exchange rate of about ₦1,326 to the dollar.
However, the $5 million-$6 million figure is not the complete cost of hosting the championships.
The indicative event budget covers the operational requirements for staging the championships, while the provision or upgrading of the required infrastructure and accommodation would represent additional expenditure for the host.
World Athletics says the indicative event budget will vary according to local costs and conditions and that it will hold virtual meetings with bidding committees to examine their proposed budgets.
The Bid Guide’s indicative allocation gives 31 per cent to logistics, the largest component, followed by event planning at 17 per cent and event management and presentation at 16 per cent.
Promotional strategy and host broadcasting each account for 10 per cent, while medical and anti-doping is allocated four per cent. Technology receives three per cent, additional events two per cent and media one per cent.
On a $5 million event budget, logistics alone would account for about $1.55 million, or approximately ₦2.06 billion. At $6 million, the logistics allocation would rise to about $1.86 million, or ₦2.47 billion.
The crucial point for Nigeria is that these figures should not be mistaken for the total cost of the 2030 hosting project. Any expenditure required to provide or upgrade competition infrastructure, training facilities and accommodation would have to be added to the indicative event budget.
Consequently, if Nigeria wins the hosting rights, the overall financial commitment could rise well beyond the ₦8 billion upper end of the indicative World Athletics event budget, depending on the country’s existing facilities and what additional infrastructure and accommodation are required.
World Athletics’ budget framework therefore provides only a starting point for calculating the cost of staging the championships, with Nigeria’s eventual hosting bill dependent on the facilities and arrangements available when the country undertakes the project.
