Nigerian Universities Head to Cairo for 12th FASU Games
Nigerian universities are preparing to make their mark at the 12th Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Games, scheduled for September 8-16, 2026 in Cairo, Egypt.
The Games will feature 81 universities from 17 African countries, bringing together more than 2,000 student athletes and officials across 18 sporting disciplines.
Nigeria’s contingent includes Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Lagos State University (LASU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), and the University of Jos (UNIJOS), among others.
These institutions are set to compete fiercely, building on Nigeria’s strong record in continental university sports.
The country has enjoyed recent successes: the 11th FASU Games in Lagos (2024) saw LASU finish second overall and UNILAG third, while the University of Ibadan hosted the 8th FASU Afro Varsity 3×3 Basketball Championship in 2026, welcoming teams from six African nations.
Nigeria is also preparing to host the 15th West African University Games (WAUG) at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, in October 2026.
A spokesperson for NUGA emphasized the importance of the Cairo Games: ‘Our universities are ready to showcase Nigeria’s talent and determination. The FASU Games are not just about competition, but about building continental unity and inspiring the next generation of student athletes.’
