Nnamdi Strikes Gold, Ajayi, Ogazi Lead Historic Sprint Charge in Eugene
Nigeria’s rising stars lit up the opening day of the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships, with Chinecherem Nnamdi delivering a golden performance in the men’s javelin and compatriots Kanyinsola Ajayi and Samuel Ogazi setting the stage for historic sprint triumphs.
Nnamdi, 24, fulfilled his billing as favorite by launching his spear to a commanding 82.26m in the first round, a mark that secured his maiden NCAA title, indoors or outdoors.
The throw was never surpassed, and his follow-up effort of 81.19m would also have been enough for gold. The victory marks his seventh throw beyond the 80m barrier this season, underlining his consistency at the elite level.
Meanwhile, Ajayi and Ogazi electrified the track with impressive runs.
Ajayi blazed to 9.94 seconds in the 100m heats, leading all qualifiers as he bids to become only the third Nigerian man to claim the prestigious sprint crown, and the first to complete the rare 60m indoor/100m outdoor double.
Ogazi, the defending champion in the 400m, stormed to 44.73 finish to book his place in Friday’s final.
The Nigerian should be seeking to run faster than his 43.82 best with Michael Norman’s championship record of 43.61 set in 2018 in his sight as he seeks back-to-back NCAA titles.
Israel Okon also kept Nigeria’s sprint hopes alive, advancing to both the 100m final in 10.07 seconds and the 200m final in 20.07 seconds, positioning himself for a potential sprint double.
It was a tougher outing for long jumper Charles Godfred, who fell short of the 8m mark. His best leap of 7.83m left him in eighth place, ending his medal bid.
