NOC Backs Netball Revival, Targets 2030 Commonwealth Games Podium
The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has officially endorsed the newly inaugurated Nigeria Netball Federation, marking a strategic revival of a sport with deep historical roots in the country.
Speaking after the inauguration on May 5, 2026, NOC President, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC), under Mallam Shehu Dikko for his visionary efforts in restoring netball to Nigeria’s national sports development agenda.
Gumel highlighted the appointment of Dr. Toyin Aluko, a former athlete with extensive administrative experience, as President of the Netball Federation, noting her capacity to steer the sport toward sustainable growth.
‘This surge of interest is being matched by a practical approach to sustainability, with corporate partners already lining up to provide the essential funding needed to spread the sport’s infrastructure across schools and local communities,’ Gumel stated.
The NOC pledged full technical support to the federation as it rebuilds its coaching and officiating capacity.
The NSC has further directed the federation to aim for a podium finish at the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, India, a long-term goal designed to inspire a new generation of Nigerian players to embrace the discipline and hard work required to compete at the highest level.
Dr. Aluko confirmed that corporate partners are already engaging with the federation to provide resources, including netball poles and balls, to schools nationwide.
This grassroots expansion is expected to lay the foundation for elite success on the international stage.
