Nwaiwu Reveals Onuachu’s Role in His Move to Trabzonspor

Nigerian centre-back Chibuike Nwaiwu has opened up about his transfer to Trabzonspor, recounting how fellow countryman and star striker Paul Onuachu played a key role in convincing him to join the burgundy-blue side.

Speaking in an interview with Trabzonspor Magazine, Nwaiwu described Onuachu as ‘like my big brother,’ explaining that he reached out to the striker on social media for advice before making the move.

‘I didn’t expect him to actually answer, but despite the level he was at, he turned to me and told me great things about the club. He said that if I want to take the next step in my career, I should come to Trabzonspor. He spoke about the beauty of the city, the size of the fans and the family atmosphere at the club. I will always respect him,’ Nwaiwu said.

The 22-year-old defender, who joined Trabzonspor during the interim transfer window, stated that his ambition is to be remembered as a player who gave his all for the club.

‘My only goal is to be remembered as someone who has always given my best and has a place in the hearts of Trabzonspor fans,’ he noted.

Nwaiwu described himself as an aggressive and fearless player who avoids unnecessary risks on the pitch. He credited Nigerian coaches Finidi George and Coach Yem for shaping his versatility, enabling him to play both as a centre-back and a libero.

On his aspirations beyond club football, Nwaiwu expressed hope that his performances in Turkey would earn him a call-up to the Nigerian national team.

‘I believe in myself and in God. I know they are watching me. It’s up to them whether they invite me or not, but I will keep working to reach the top,’ he said.

Reflecting on his journey, Nwaiwu encouraged aspiring footballers to remain resilient. ‘If I’m here today, it’s because I never gave up. People who work hard and don’t give up can come here too. They must continue to work, they will definitely achieve their goals,’ he advised.
