Ofili sets new African 200m indoor record
Usoro wins long jump title, Chukwuma makes 60m final
It was another record breaking night for Nigeria’s Favour as she shatters her own African 200m indoor record for the second time this year.
The Nigerian, 19, ran quite fast in the half lap opening round at the SEC Indoor Championships held at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium, Bryan-College Station, Texas with a personal best of 22.61 .
The time betters her own previous African indoor record in the event; it moved her up to No. 3 in both the LSU record book and the NCAA rankings this season.
She has also moved up to fourth in the world’s top list this season and 39th in the all-time 200m top list.
Ofili now owns the fastest three times in African history indoors over the 200m distance with times of 22.61, 22.71, and 22.75.
She is one of just two African women to have broken 23 seconds in the event after Ivory Coast’s Muriel Ahoure who first ran a sub 23 seconds (22.80s) in the event.
All eyes will now be on Ofili in the final where she will attempt to race past Kentucky’s Abby STEINER, the world leader in the event at 22.37s who ran 22.44s to win her heat.
The Nigerian also advanced on to the finals of the 60 meters with a 7.21s run.
Meanwhile, Ruth Usoro won the women’s long jump at the Big 12 Championships Friday evening at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center
The Texas Tech track & field teams completed day one of at the Big 12 Championships Friday evening at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center at Iowa State University.
The 24 year old won the event for a third-straight season with a leap of 6.59m which was on her final leap.
Rosemary Chukwuma (23.65) Knowledge Omovoh (53.31) will be in action in the 200m and 400m respectively on Saturday. The former will also be competing in the in 60m final after qualifying with a 7.21 seconds performnce on Friday.
