Ofili storms to new 22.71s African 200m indoor record

Remains the only Nigerian to run inside 23 seconds in the event

Favour Ofili scorched to a new African record in the women’s 200m at the Albuquerque Convention Centre as part of the first day of action at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, clocking 22.71 seconds.

It was almost a full second clear of Tionna Brown who finished second in 23.61 seconds and Amber Anning who ran 23.64 seconds to place third.

The time is four hundreths of a second better than her previous African record of 22.75 seconds which she ran at the 2021 SEC indoor Championship.

The time is also the third fastest in Louisiana State University record in the women’s half lap.

Ofili, 19, remains the only Nigerian and second African woman after Ivory Coast’s Murielle Ahoure (22.80s) to break 23 seconds in the event.

The World U-20 200m bronze medallist has now dipped inside 23 seconds four times since she ran 22.75 seconds at the Randal Tyson indoor centre in Fayetteville, Arkansas in February 2021.
