Ogazi and Ajayi Poised for Historic Runs at NCAA East First Round in Kentucky

All eyes will be on Nigerian 400m record holder Samuel Ogazi when the NCAA East First Round Championships begin Wednesday at the University of Kentucky.

The University of Alabama junior enters the meet as the overwhelming favorite to advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships, where he will defend the title he won last year.

Ogazi, 20, has already clocked a blistering 43.95 seconds this season, making him the fastest man in the field and the second-fastest over the distance worldwide in 2026.

Expectations are high that he could reclaim the world lead, which briefly slipped away last weekend when reigning world champion Collen Kebinashipi ran 43.92 at the Diamond League meeting in Xiamen, China.

Ogazi will not be the only Nigerian athlete attracting attention in Kentucky. Rising star Edidiong Udo, the 12th Nigerian to break the 45-second barrier, will also line up in the 400m.

In the men’s 100m, Kanyinsola Ajayi is tipped to make headlines after a disappointing exit at the SEC Championships. Ajayi, who ran 6.45 indoors, is expected to challenge the long-standing Nigerian record of 9.85 seconds set by Olusoji Fasuba in 2006.

Joining him in the sprint spotlight are Israel Okon, aiming to become the 15th Nigerian to dip under 10 seconds, Joshua Caleb of LSU, who has run 10.20 this season, and Adekalu Fakorede, who is closing in on the milestone after clocking 10.04.

In the 200m, Okon will also bid to become only the fourth Nigerian man to break the 20-second barrier. His rapid progression, from 23.05 in 2025 to 20.10 this year, has positioned him as one of the most exciting prospects in the field.

With multiple Nigerian athletes in contention across sprint events, Lexington is set to witness a showcase of speed and talent as the NCAA East First Round gets underway.
