Okoye pays Rohr tribute, says German turned his young football career around

Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has paid tribute to former gaffer of Nigeria’s senior national team Gernot Rohr following his dismissal Sunday night by the Nigeria Football Federation.

The Watford of England bound Okoye has “nothing but praise and gratitude” for the 68 year old who gave the 22 year old goalie his first international exposure.

Okoye was invited for the Super Eagles 2-2 draw with Ukraine in an international friendly in September 2019 but left to sit on the bench for the entire duration of the game.

The Sparta Rotterdam goalie however made his debut in the following match, the 1-1 draw against Brazil in October 2019.

Okoye grew to establish himself as Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper which helped to secure a move to the Premier League.

“You turned my young football career around, helped me and gave this career a big boost!. You let me do what I always dreamed of, playing for my fatherland Nigeria.

Thank you for almost 3 amazing years, your support and your trust. I’m wishing you all the best coach Rohr,” he tweeted on Monday.
