Olympic legend, Moutawakel elected IOC Vice President

Olympic legend, Nawal El Moutawakel has been elected as one of the Vice-Presidents of the International Olympic Committee during its 142nd IOC Session meeting in Paris, France on Thursday.

The Moroccan, who made history as the inaugural winner of the women’s 400m hurdles event at the 1984 Summer Olympics is also her country’s first Olympic gold medalist.

Ms Moutawakel was one of two Vice Presidents elected on Thursday. She was first elected into the Executive Board of the IOC in 1998, three years after she was elected a council member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), now known as World Athletics.

Elected alongside her is Dr Gerardo Werthein of Argentina and their terms of office will start on 10 August after the conclusion of the 142nd IOC Session, when the terms of Mr John Coates (AUS) and Mr Ser Miang Ng (SGP) will come to an end.
