Onwuzurike, Enekwechi Set for Budapest Test Ahead of Commonwealth Games

Nigerian track and field stars Udodi Onwuzurike and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will compete on Tuesday at the 2026 Istvan Gyulai Memorial, the Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix, as they continue preparations for the Commonwealth Games.

The World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest will serve as the final competition for the Nigerian duo before they join the rest of Team Nigeria at their Aberdeen training camp in Scotland.

Onwuzurike, the former World U20 champion and 2023 NCAA 200m champion, will be looking to build on his season’s best performance of 20.18 seconds, recorded earlier this month.

The sprint star will use the meeting as an opportunity to sharpen his form ahead of the Commonwealth Games, where he is expected to play a key role for Nigeria.

Enekwechi, the reigning Nigerian and African Games champion in the shot put, will also be aiming for a strong performance in Budapest as he assesses his readiness for the major championship.

The Nigerian thrower will be hoping to return to the Commonwealth Games podium after narrowly missing out four years ago, when he finished fourth.

The Gyulai Memorial provides both athletes with a crucial opportunity to measure their progress against elite international competition before turning their full attention to Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games preparations.
