Onwuzurike Hits 20.18 200m Season’s Best Ahead of Commonwealth Games

Former World U20 200m champion Udodi Onwuzurike signaled his return to form on Friday at the 76th Boris Hanzeković Memorial in Zagreb, clocking a 20.18 season’s best to finish third in the men’s 200m.

The 23-year-old Nigerian sprinter produced his sharpest run of the year, finishing behind Canadian Olympic champion Andre De Grasse, who won in 19.95, and Morocco’s Yassine Hssine, who set a new national record of 20.00.

Onwuzurike’s performance comes at a crucial time as he builds momentum ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he is expected to be one of Team Nigeria’s leading medal contenders.

He is among the 29 athletes invited to camp by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, underscoring his importance to the nation’s sprint squad.

The 2023 NCAA 200m champion, who famously ran a lifetime best of 19.76 on his way to winning the USA collegiate outdoor title three years ago, is now targeting another sub-20 performance.

His run in Zagreb suggests he is edging closer to rediscovering that blistering form.
