Osimhen breaks Higuain Napoli record in Cremonese win

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen shattered Gonzalo Higuain’s record of scoring in five consecutive league games for Napoli by taking his own tally to six for the season after netting in his club’s 2-0 defeat of Cremonese last weekend. Higuain reached his feat in the 2015/16 campaign.

The Nigerian who now has 17 goals in Serie A and 18 in all competitions has scored eight goals in the last six games, also getting one assist.

The 24 year old still leads the top scorer’s race in the Serie A with his 17 strikes, five more than the chasing duo of compatriot, Ademola Lookman who plays for Atalanta and Inter Milan’s Lautaro MartĂnez who have both score 12 times each.

Osimhen’s immediate target now will be breaking the African record for most goals in a single season held by compatriot Simy Nwankwo who scored 20 times in 2020/21 season and the overall top scoring African in the league’s history held by George Opong Weah who scored 46 times for AC Milan in 114 games.

The Super Eagles will also hope to end the season as the player who has scored most in a single season in the Serie. Higuain and Ciro Immobile holld that record with the 36 goals they each scored in different seasons.

Osimhen will be looking to score for the seventh straight game for Napoli when they visit the Stadio Mapei – Citta del Tricolore on Friday to face Sassuolo, a team the Nigerian has scored four times against in three appearances.
