Osimhen nets goal number 23, overtakes Weah as Serie A African all-time top scorer!

Osimhen scored his 23rd Serie A goal of the season in Napoli’s 1-0 defeat of visiting Fiorentina to become the top scoring African in the history of the
competition.

Mid-week the Nigerian became the joint top scorer in the league with Liberia’s George Weah with his 46th goal in 78 games across three seasons, same as Weah
who scored 46 times in 114 appearances for AC Milan in the competition.

Osimhen is now the sole owner of that record to add to the one he set mid-week when his 22nd strike made him the top scoring African in a single Serie A
season, moving past Cameroun’s Samuel Eto’o hose 21 goals in 35 games in the 2010/11 season made the the top scorer.

The Nigerian had earlier missed a penalty on 46 minutes but has now made up for it with his second goal in five games against Fiorentina.

The 24 year old is now four goals clear of Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez in the race for the competition’s top scorer award.

Osimhen is also on course to becoming the first African to end a Serie A season as top scorer and the third Napoli player after Edinson Cavani and Gonzalo
Higuain to do so.

Edinson Cavani was Serie A top scorer in the 2012/13 season with 29 goals while Gonzalo Higuain netted 36 goals to win the Capocannoniere in the 2015/16
season.

The former Lille of France star is also looking to become the first Napoli player to win the Capocannoniere the same year the club wins the Scudetto.

Ac Milan’s Pietro Paolo Virdis was top scorer with 17 goals when Napoli won their first title in 1987 while Netherland’s Marco van Basten was the Capocannoniere winner when Diego Maradona led the Partenopei to win again in 1990.
