Osimhen still on course to equal Platini, Van Basten, Shevchenko Serie A feats

Nigerian set to become seventh player to win Serie A title and top scorer award same season

Napoli forward, Victor Osimhen may have fired blanks Friday night against Lazio thereby ending his consecutive scoring streak at eight games but the 24 year old is still on course to becoming the seventh player to win the Scudetto and the top scorer award the same season.

The Super Eagles star has scored 19 times in 21 Serie A games so far this term, six above Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez who is the Nigerian’s nearest challenger.

Osimhen is however tipped to end the season as top scorer and Napoli, 17 points clear of second placed Lazio at the top are also the overwhelming favourite to win their third Scudetto, the first since 1990/91.
If the former Lille of France forward achieves this feat in May, he will equal the incredible feats achieved by some iconic players in the league and world history.

Frenchman, Michel Platini scored 68 goals in 146 Serie A games and the former UEFA President finished top scorer in Serie A for three consecutive seasons (1982–83, 1983–84, and 1984–85).
In two of the three seasons he finished as the topscorer in 1983–84 and 1984–85, Juventus won the Scudetto.

Marcko Van Basten also led AC Milan to the 1991/92 Scudetto scoring 25 goals in 31 games to finish as top scorer, same way Aldo Serena did for Inter Milan, netting 22 times in 32 appearances to finish as the top scorer in the 1988/89 season.

Italian legend Gianlucca Vialli, now late led Sampdoria to their first ever Scudetto in 1990/91 season, scoring 19 goals in 26 games to finish as the league’s top scorer. The former Chelsea player and manager scored 123 goals in 325 Serie A games.

Another former Chelsea player, Andriy Shevchenko netted 24 times in 32 games to lead AC Milan to their 17th scudetto in the 2003–04 season, also finishing as the top scorer.

Another Frenchman, David Trezequet scored 24 goals in 34 games to lead Juventus to the Serie A title in 2001/02 season and finished as the top scorer that season. He scored 123 goals in 214 Serie A appearances.

Osimhen is now one step away from achieving the record-breaking combination.
