Owen, Benitez: Arsenal could do a Leicester this season and win the Premier League

Former Liverpool player, Michael Owen and coach, Rafa Benitez have joined former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger in predicting the Gunners to be amongst the challengers for the Premier League title this season.

Speaking after Liverpool defeated Manchester City 1-0 in a pulsating Premier League game on Sunday, Owen and Benitez believe Arsenal could spring a surprise.

Owen in particular says Arsenal could repeat Leicester City’s 2016 feat when they surprised the football world to win their first and only Premier League title.

”When Leicester went four points clear at some stage, it was like they are not going to do anything…Arsenal have got a lot more ability than the Foxes and I do think if they continue like this in the next three, four, five games, if they contiunue winning, then all of a sudden people will be thinking, wow they are the real deal’.

‘Man City not picking up three points at Anfield against Liverpool also strengtens Arsenal grip at the top,’ he said.

Benitez says the World Cup break will certainly help Arsenal in their bid for a fourth Premier League title.

”They have a young team and with the World Cup break, they will recover and they will have fresh legs for the second part of the season,’ he said.

Wenger had last month tipped his former side for Premier League success.

“I would say they have a good chance this season because I don’t see any super dominating team. I believe that it is a good opportunity to do it this season.

“Of course, it’s a little bit of a special season as well because you have the World Cup in the middle and you don’t know how much that will affect the performances of the individual players and of the teams.

“Overall, I believe there is a good opportunity there this season,” the 72-year-old concluded.
