Oyibu, Ezechukwu Draw Tough World U20 200m Semi-final Heats
Nigeria’s hopes of securing two places in the women’s 200m final at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon face a stern examination after Oluebube Ezechukwu and Oghene Success Oyibu were handed difficult semi-final draws.
Ezechukwu, who owns a personal best of 22.77 seconds, lines up in Heat Two alongside world U20 leader Shanoya Mikalia Douglas of Jamaica, who boasts a championship-leading 22.11 seconds, and American Mariah Maxwell, the second-fastest entrant this year with 22.44.
Italy’s Elisa Valensin (23.09) and Sweden’s Jamilia Bernhardsson (23.16) further strengthen an ultra-competitive race where only the first three finishers are guaranteed qualification for the final.
Oyibu, Nigeria’s second representative with a personal best of 22.90 seconds, has also been drawn into a stacked third semi-final.
She will battle South Africa’s Rume Burger (23.17), Great Britain’s Sophie Thomas (23.10), Australia’s Amaya Mearns (23.15) and Antigua and Barbuda’s teenage sensation Tyra Fenton (23.12), with another automatic top-three finish required to progress.
The opening semi-final is equally competitive, featuring American Mia Maxwell, who has a season’s best of 22.49, and Jamaica’s Sashana Johnson (22.95).
With only the top three athletes from each of the three semi-finals advancing to the championship final, both Nigerian sprinters will need to produce their best performances of the season to keep the country’s medal hopes alive.
