FIFA Ranking: Peseiro says Super Eagles can be Africa’s top ranked nation again 16 years after
Super Eagles head coash Jose Peseiro says his next target is to get the Nigerian senior national team ranked as the best country in Africa after they moved 14 places up to third in Africa and 28th in the world in the latest FIFA ranking.
The Super Eagles were rewarded for their silver medal winning effort at the 34th Africa Cup of Nations which ended on Sunday in Cote d’Ivoire, soaring from 42nd best last year to 28th in he world.
The ranking equals their best in 11 years in the world and their best in Africa since they were ranked the third best on the continent in 16 months.
A delighted Peseiro who led the Super Eagles to their fifth silver medal in Africa Cup of Nations history is targetting a first place ranking for his team.
The Portuguese took to his social media page to thumbs up the Super Eagles and stated the next goal is to reach number one in the ranking.
The Super Eagles are 141 points behind the top ranked nation in Africa, Morocco and will need to do well in the World Cup qualifiers starting in June and the international in March and hoping both Morocco and number two ranked Senegal stumble to ensure their flight to the top.
The last time the Super Eagles were ranked as the best in Africa was between September 2007 and January 2008.
