Pillay, Nkoana Lead South Africa Squad forAfrican Senior Athletics Championships in Accra
Athletics South Africa (ASA) has unveiled a 34-member squad for the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, from May 12-17, 2026, with sprint sensations Lythe Pillay and Bradley Nkoana spearheading the team.
The announcement comes on the heels of standout performances at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, where both athletes played pivotal roles in securing silver medals and national records.
Pillay’s blistering 42.66 split in the men’s 4x400m relay helped South Africa clock a record 2:55.07, placing them third on the all-time world rankings.
Nkoana, meanwhile, was part of the men’s 4x100m team that set an African record of 37.49 behind the USA.
Relay stars Rogail Joseph and Marlie Viljoen also feature, having helped secure mixed 4x400m qualification for the 2027 World Championships in Beijing.
Rising talents Joviale Mbisha and Kayla la Grange, who set a national record in the women’s 4x100m heats, are included as well.
The squad blends youth and experience, with 10 athletes boasting previous African Championship medals. Among them are world indoor champion Prudence Sekgodiso, sprint hurdler Marione Fourie, and resurgent long jump star Luvo Manyonga.
Acting ASA president John Mathane said the selection reflects South Africa’s ambition to defend their continental crown
