Popoola Praises Team Nigeria’s Medal Haul in Bamako as Nigeria Taekwondo Federation Eyes More Success at African Championships

President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), Grand Master Tayo Popoola, has hailed Team Nigeria’s performance at the ongoing African Taekwondo Championships in Bamako, Mali, describing the outing as a reflection of the athletes’ determination and quality.

Speaking from Bamako, Popoola noted that the championship has been highly competitive, with athletes from across the continent showcasing exceptional technical ability and fighting spirit.

She confirmed that Nigeria has already secured two bronze medals in Kyorugi through Jordan Joel in the heavyweight (+87kg) category and Chidinma Okoko in the (-62kg) division, while Ability Matthews Udom clinched gold in the (-57kg) Para event.

Popoola commended Joel for his impressive debut performance, highlighting his courage in facing Olympic and World Championship medalists to secure a bronze medal.

‘For him to achieve this under such circumstances shows his tenacity, courage, and immense potential,’ she said.

The NTF President emphasized the scale of the competition, with more than 35 countries participating and many arriving with large contingents of athletes, including international tournament champions. Despite the tough field, she expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to add more medals.

With Kyorugi events nearing completion, Popoola turned her attention to the Poomsae team, stating: ‘We are still competing in the Poomsae events and we hope to secure medals in various categories. I trust our athletes to deliver and improve our position on the medal table.
