Portugal Lose 1.5m Followers After Ronaldo Walkout

Portugal’s national team have reportedly lost more than 1.5 million Instagram followers following Cristiano Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from camp ahead of their UEFA Nations League clash with Denmark.
Ronaldo, 41, reportedly became frustrated after being left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway despite warming up for more than 30 minutes.
The situation escalated after a meeting with Portuguese FA president Pedro Proença was expected to result in coach Jorge Jesus publicly apologising to Ronaldo, but the manager reportedly backed out.
Ronaldo subsequently left the national team camp, triggering a major reaction on social media, with RMC Sport reporting the sharp decline in Portugal’s Instagram following.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner had started Portugal’s opening victory over Wales but missed several chances before being left as an unused substitute against Norway.
Spanish football analyst Guillem Balagué criticised Jesus over the decision, arguing that Ronaldo should be treated differently because of his status in world football.
Ronaldo remains the most-capped player and leading scorer in men’s international football, with 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal.
