Premier League: Ajayi delighted after historic goal against Man United

Hull City defender Semi Ajayi was delighted to score as the newly promoted side secured a historic 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United.

Ajayi’s goal was his third in the Premier League and his second against a top six side, following his strike in West Brom’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool in December 2020.

The goal came in his 34th Premier League appearance.

‘It was amazing. It capped off a really good start that we had,’ Ajayi said. ‘We had a couple of chances before that and that one put us in the lead in the game. Something to protect but also build on. Buzzing to get the goal to get us on our way and happy it led to us getting three points.’

The Nigerian also joked about Oli McBurnie’s celebration, saying: ‘I thought he scored as well! He asked me, ‘Did you score?’ And I said, ‘I think so.’ I didn’t really care if any of us scored as long as we got the goal.’

The victory was Hull’s first-ever Premier League win over Manchester United, ending an 11-game winless run against the Red Devils (P11 W1 D2 L8). It was also their first league victory over United since November 1974, when the sides met in the second tier.

For United, the defeat was historic in unwanted fashion. They have now lost their opening league game in consecutive Premier League seasons for the first time, following a 1-0 defeat by Arsenal in 2025/26 with a 2-0 loss to Hull City in 2026/27.

United also suffered their first-ever opening-day league defeat to a newly promoted side, having won 10 of their previous 13 such fixtures and drawn the other three.
