Premier League legend Alan Shearer has delivered his verdict on Matchweek 12, predicting victories for Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, while forecasting that champions Manchester City will stumble at St James’ Park against Newcastle United.
Shearer, the league’s all-time top scorer with 260 goals and 64 assists in 441 appearances, revealed his predictions in his role as a Betfair ambassador to Metro. He believes Chelsea will edge Burnley in the early kick-off at Turf Moor, noting that while the host will look to make home advantage count, Enzo Maresca’s men are unbeaten in their last four and should continue that run.
In the North London derby, Shearer expects Arsenal to prevail over Tottenham. He admitted derbies are notoriously difficult to call, but said Arsenal’s mentality will push them through. While praising Spurs’ improvement under Thomas Frank, particularly at set-pieces, he tipped Mikel Arteta’s side to ‘edge it’ in what he expects to be a tight contest.
When it comes to Newcastle versus Manchester City, Shearer anticipates a draw. He acknowledged Erling Haaland’s extraordinary form makes it difficult to bet against City, but insisted St James’ Park will be ‘rocking’ and that Eddie Howe’s side will not allow another weak performance.
He suggested fatigue after the international break could play a role, but believes Newcastle’s energy and home support will be decisive in holding Guardiola’s men.
Shearer also backed Liverpool to bounce back at Anfield against Nottingham Forest. He pointed to their inconsistency, contrasting a superb Champions League display with a poor showing against City, but said the fixture represents ‘a great opportunity to get their season up and running.’
He expects Forest to frustrate and counter with pace, but believes Liverpool will seize the chance to return to winning ways.
Finally, Shearer tipped Manchester United to overcome Everton at Old Trafford. He praised United’s resilience in their comeback against Spurs, suggesting Ruben Amorim’s side now have ‘the bit between their teeth.’
While acknowledging Everton’s ability to frustrate opponents, he argued United’s attacking options will prove decisive in securing a home win.
