Race Analysis: How Cherotich Smashed the Games Record to Win Commonwealth Steeplechase Gold

Faith Cherotich produced a brilliantly executed race to smash the Commonwealth Games record and storm to victory in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at Scotstoun Stadium, finishing in a remarkable 9:01.76.

The Kenyan was content to sit just behind Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai through the opening stages as the pair dictated the pace.

Chemutai led at 400m in 1:04.7, with Cherotich tucked in behind at 1:05.0, and the positions remained unchanged through 800m (2:17.2 and 2:17.4 respectively) and 1,600m, where less than a tenth of a second separated them.

The decisive move came just after the halfway point. Cherotich surged to the front before the 2,000m mark, reaching it in 6:02.4, four-tenths of a second ahead of Chemutai.

From there, she steadily increased the tempo while maintaining her rhythm over the barriers and water jumps, refusing to give her rivals any opportunity to respond.

Over the closing kilometre, the Kenyan produced a devastating display of strength. She covered the final laps with remarkable consistency, clocking successive 100-metre splits of 18.8, 17.9, 16.9, 17.2 and 17.6 seconds before unleashing a blistering 15.9-second sprint to the finish.

England’s Elise Thorner, who ran a personal best 9:05.45, emerged as Cherotich’s closest challenger after moving into second over the closing laps, but she was unable to match the Kenyan’s relentless acceleration.

Chemutai, who had led the race early, faded to third in 9:09.96 as Cherotich’s sustained pace proved decisive.

Cherotich crossed the line in 9:01.76 to erase the previous Commonwealth Games record of 9:15.68 set by Beatrice Chepkoech at Birmingham 2022 by almost 14 seconds.

Although she narrowly missed Chepkoech’s world record of 8:44.32, the performance confirmed her status as one of the world’s premier steeplechasers and extended Kenya’s rich tradition of dominance in the event.
