Race Analysis: How Nigeria Missed a First Commonwealth 4x100m Gold Since 1982

Nigeria came within five hundredths of a second of ending a 44-year wait for the Commonwealth Games men’s 4x100m title, finishing third in a race that was decided by the narrowest of margins.

The Nigerians clocked a season’s best of 38.12 seconds, just 0.05 seconds behind winners Australia (38.07) and 0.01 seconds behind Canada (38.11). Ghana also finished only 0.01 seconds behind Nigeria in fourth, underlining just how tight the contest was.

The official split times show that Nigeria was always in contention but never managed to establish a decisive advantage.

Australia led after every exchange. The Australians reached 100m in 10.18 seconds, ahead of Nigeria’s 10.47, and maintained that lead at the second exchange, passing the baton in 19.62 compared to Nigeria’s 19.80.

Nigeria made up valuable ground on the third leg. At 300m, the team had reduced the gap to just 0.18 seconds, reaching the final exchange in 29.20, with Australia still ahead on 29.02. Canada (29.26) and Ghana (29.22) were also within touching distance, leaving all four teams in contention over the final 100m.

The anchor leg produced a thrilling finish.

Nigeria covered the anchor leg in 8.92 seconds, faster than Australia’s 9.05 seconds, allowing the team to almost erase the 0.18-second deficit at the final exchange.

Australia, however, had built just enough of a cushion over the opening three legs to hold on for gold.

Canada produced the fastest anchor leg of the leading teams at 8.85 seconds.

Starting the final leg 0.06 seconds behind Nigeria, the Canadians recovered that deficit and crossed the line just 0.01 seconds ahead to claim silver. Ghana’s 8.91-second anchor left them another 0.01 seconds behind Nigeria in fourth.
