Rafiatu Lawal Smashes Three Games Records to Win Commonwealth Gold

Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal produced a sensational performance to win the women’s 58kg weightlifting title at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, setting three new Games records on her way to the gold medal.

Lawal successfully lifted 103kg in the snatch to break the Commonwealth Games record before raising 126kg in the clean and jerk for another Games record.

Her combined total of 229kg also established a new Games record as she finished comfortably ahead of Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau, who claimed silver with a total lift of 215kg. India’s Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam completed the podium with 199kg.

The dominant victory adds another gold medal to Team Nigeria’s tally in Glasgow and further underlines the country’s strength in weightlifting, with Lawal delivering one of the standout performances of the Games through her record-breaking display.
