Record-Breaking Didih Hails Team Nigeria’s Preparation After Glasgow Gold
“I’m very happy and very excited because these are my first Games ever, my first Commonwealths,” an elated Onome Omolola Didih said after producing a record-breaking performance to win the women’s 53kg weightlifting title at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Nigerian credited Team Nigeria’s thorough preparations for her success, revealing that the squad’s training tour ahead of the Games helped the athletes adapt to the weather and competition conditions.
“We have prepared really well for these Commonwealths. We came for a training tour, so we would be prepared for the weather and conditions,” she said.
Didih dominated the competition from the outset at the SEC Armadillo, opening with a commanding 93kg lift in the snatch to establish a five-kilogram lead over the rest of the field.
She then held off a determined challenge from India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav in the clean and jerk to secure the gold medal, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx completed the podium with bronze.
Her outstanding display produced new Commonwealth and Games records, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Nigerian delegation inside the arena.
The victory further underlined Team Nigeria’s dominance in weightlifting at Glasgow 2026, with Didih playing a key role in the country’s impressive gold medal haul.
